  • Name: Roy Clay.

  • Nickname: Sumo.

  • Occupation: Semi Retired.

  • Instrument/Position in Band: Eb Bass.

  • Previous Bands: Coventry Imperial Band.

  • When did you start playing? What got you into banding?: Started playing at the age of 11 on baritone in the Ash Green School Band – the conductor and music teacher was Albert Chappell who also conducted City of Coventry and Desford Bands.

  • Funniest or Most Embarrassing Banding Moment: Playing at the National Finals at Imperial College in London in the old Second Section(in 1980?). The 3rd cornet player, Jack Lea, sneezed mid way through our performance during a quiet section. His false teeth shot out of his mouth and across the stage.

  • Highlight of Banding Career: Going through all four of the old brass band contesting sections with Ash Green school Band (later renamed City of Coventry ‘B’ Band then Coventry Imperial Band) from Fourth to Championship, including winning the Fourth Section National Finals on the way.

  • Other hobbies/interests: Rugby, as a spectator.

  • Related to anyone else in the band? If so, who?: Gordon Clay, my brother, plays cornet.
